Costa Mesa (pronunciation: /ˌkoʊstə ˈmeɪsə/) is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The city's name means "coast table" in Spanish, alluding to its geographical positioning on a plateau by the Pacific Ocean.

Etymology

The name "Costa Mesa" originated from the city's location as a plateau by the ocean. "Costa" is Spanish for coast, and "Mesa" is Spanish for table or plateau. The city was incorporated in 1953, choosing the name Costa Mesa for its clear depiction of the city's topography.

Geography

Costa Mesa is located 37 miles southeast of Los Angeles, 88 miles north of San Diego and 425 miles south of San Francisco. The city has a total area of 15.7 square miles, of which 15.7 square miles is land and 0.05 square miles is water.
