Chicago, officially the City of Chicago, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the third most populous city in the United States. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, education, technology, telecommunications, and transportation.

History[edit]

Chicago was founded in 1833 and quickly grew from a small settlement to a major city. The city's strategic location along the Great Lakes and its connection to the Mississippi River via the Illinois and Michigan Canal made it a vital transportation hub.

Early Settlement[edit]

The area that is now Chicago was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi.

Growth and Development[edit]
