It was originally part of the Samuel Merritt Hospital, which was established through a bequest from Dr. Samuel Merritt, a prominent physician and former mayor of Oakland. Over the years, the institution expanded its academic offerings and became a degree-granting institution.

In 1999, the institution was renamed Samuel Merritt College, and in 2009, it achieved university status, becoming Samuel Merritt University. This change reflected its growth and the broadening of its academic programs.
