Barbadian
Barbadian
Barbadian (pronunciation: /bɑːrˈbeɪdɪən/), also known as Bajan (pronunciation: /ˈbeɪdʒən/), refers to anything related to Barbados, including its people, culture, or language. The term is derived from the name of the island country, Barbados, located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies.
Etymology
The term "Barbadian" is derived from "Barbados," the name of the island. The name "Barbados" is from either the Portuguese term os barbados or the Spanish equivalent los barbados, both meaning "the bearded ones". It is unclear whether "bearded" refers to the long, hanging roots of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia), indigenous to the island; or to the allegedly bearded Caribs once inhabiting the island.
