Baked Goods

Baked goods (/ˈbeɪkt ɡʊdz/) are foods made from dough or batter, that are cooked by baking, a method of cooking food that uses prolonged dry heat, normally in an oven, but also in hot ashes, or on hot stones. The most common baked item is bread but many other types of foods are baked as well.

Etymology

The term "baked goods" is a compound noun that combines the past participle of the verb "bake" (from Old English "bacan", meaning "to bake") and the noun "goods" (from Old English "god", meaning "something that is good").

Types of Baked Goods

There are many types of baked goods, some of which include:

  • Bread: A staple food prepared from a dough of flour and water, usually by baking.
  • Cake: A form of sweet food made from flour, sugar, and other ingredients, that is usually baked.
  • Pastry: A dough of flour, water, and shortening that may be savoury or sweetened.
  • Cookie: A small, flat, sweet, baked good, usually containing flour, sugar and some type of oil or fat.
  • Pie: A baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough casing that contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients.
