Ariana

Ariana (/ɑːriˈɑːnə/; from Latin Ariana, from Greek Ἀρ(ε)ιανή Ar(e)ianē, in turn from Old Persian and Avestan Airyanem Vaejah) is a term used by classical geographers to describe a district of wide extent in Central Asia, comprising the eastern part of the Persian empire, now all of Afghanistan and a part of Iran.

Etymology

The term Ariana is derived from the Old Persian and Avestan Airyanem Vaejah, which means "The Land of the Aryans". The Avestan term Airyanem means "noble" or "exalted", and Vaejah is a geographical term, denoting a place or region. The term was used by the ancient Greeks to refer to the eastern part of the Persian Empire, which included present-day Afghanistan and parts of Iran.
