Jon Ossoff
Jon Ossoff (pronounced: jɒn ɒsɒf) is an American politician and investigative journalist. He is a member of the Democratic Party and has been serving as the U.S. Senator from Georgia since 2021.
Etymology
The name Jon is a shortened form of Jonathan, which is of Hebrew origin and means "God has given". The surname Ossoff is of Russian Jewish origin.
Biography
Jon Ossoff was born on February 16, 1987, in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended the Paideia School and later graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in International Affairs. He also holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics.
Ossoff began his career as a national security staffer and aide to U.S. Representative Hank Johnson. He later worked as an investigative journalist and CEO for Insight TWI, a UK-based investigative television production company.
In 2017, Ossoff ran in a special election for Georgia's 6th congressional district but was defeated by Republican Karen Handel. He ran for the U.S. Senate in the 2020–21 Georgia Senate election and won, becoming the youngest member of the Senate at the age of 33.
