Algerian (/ælˈdʒɪəriən/ al-JEER-ee-ən) refers to something of, from, or related to Algeria, a country in North Africa. The term can be used to describe the people, culture, language, or other aspects of the country.

Etymology

The term "Algerian" is derived from the name of the country, Algeria, which in turn is named after its capital city, Algiers. The name "Algiers" comes from the Arabic "al-Jazā'ir" (الجزائر), which means "the islands," referring to the four islands that used to lie off the city's coast before they were incorporated into the mainland in 1525.
