Javanese is an ethnic group native to the Indonesian island of Java. They are the largest ethnic group in Indonesia and are predominantly located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The Javanese have a rich cultural heritage, with influences from Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, and Western cultures.

The history of the Javanese people dates back to the 1st millennium BC, with the Dong Son culture being one of the earliest known civilizations in Java. The Javanese have been influenced by various cultures and religions over the centuries, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Western culture.

Language[edit]

The Javanese language is the native language of the Javanese people. It is part of the Austronesian language family, and is the most spoken language in Indonesia after Indonesian. The Javanese language has its own script, known as the Javanese script, which is derived from the Brahmi script of ancient India.

Javanese culture is rich and diverse, with influences from Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, and Western cultures. The majority of Javanese people practice Islam, with a significant minority adhering to Christianity, Hinduism, and traditional Javanese beliefs known as Kejawen. The Javanese form of Islam is often characterized by its syncretism, incorporating elements of pre-Islamic Javanese beliefs.

Javanese cuisine is known for its rich flavors and diverse ingredients. It is heavily influenced by the island's agricultural products, such as rice, fish, and spices. Some of the most popular Javanese dishes include Gudeg, a sweet jackfruit stew, and Satay, skewered and grilled meat.
