Polar body biopsy is a technique used in reproductive medicine and genetics to assess the genetic material of an oocyte (egg cell) by analyzing its polar bodies. This procedure is primarily utilized in the context of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and assisted reproductive technology (ART).

Polar body biopsy involves the extraction and examination of the polar bodies, which are byproducts of the oocyte's meiotic division. The first polar body is extruded after the first meiotic division, and the second polar body is extruded after the second meiotic division, which occurs upon fertilization.
