La Leche League International (LLLI) is a non-profit organization that promotes breastfeeding through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education. It seeks to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through its network of local meetings and the support of trained volunteers.

History[edit]

La Leche League was founded in 1956 in Franklin Park, Illinois, by seven mothers who wanted to provide support and information to women who wished to breastfeed their babies. At a time when breastfeeding rates were declining in the U.S., these women formed a group to offer support to other mothers. The name "La Leche League" was chosen; "la leche" is Spanish for "the milk."

Mission and Activities[edit]

The primary mission of La Leche League is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. Activities include monthly group meetings, telephone and online support, and the publication of various materials on the subject of breastfeeding.

Structure and Organization[edit]

La Leche League operates through both local chapters and national/regional entities, with a presence in over 70 countries. Each local group typically holds monthly meetings where breastfeeding support is provided by trained volunteer leaders. The organization also hosts international conferences and workshops to train its leaders and to promote breastfeeding awareness.

Impact[edit]

La Leche League has played a significant role in changing public perceptions of breastfeeding and in increasing breastfeeding rates in many parts of the world. Its advocacy has contributed to the development of more supportive breastfeeding policies in workplaces and public spaces.

Controversies and Challenges[edit]

Like many organizations, La Leche League has faced challenges and controversies, particularly regarding its stance on breastfeeding exclusivity and the challenges of adapting to the diverse needs of modern families. However, it continues to adapt its programs and outreach strategies to meet the changing needs of mothers and families.
