George Gunther

George Gunther (August 6, 1919 – August 26, 2012) was an American politician who served as a member of the Connecticut State Senate for the 21st district. He was the longest-serving state senator in Connecticut history, holding office from 1966 to 2006.

Early Life and Education[edit]

George Gunther was born on August 6, 1919, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He attended local schools and later graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in forestry.

Political Career[edit]

Gunther began his political career in 1966 when he was elected to the Connecticut State Senate representing the 21st district, which includes parts of Stratford, Shelton, and Monroe. He was a member of the Republican Party.

During his tenure, Gunther was known for his advocacy on environmental issues, healthcare, and education. He played a significant role in the establishment of the Housatonic Community College and was a strong supporter of the Long Island Sound cleanup efforts.
