Citymeals-on-Wheels

Citymeals-on-Wheels is a non-profit organization based in New York City that provides meals and companionship to the city's homebound elderly. Each year, Citymeals prepares and delivers over 2 million weekend, holiday and emergency meals to more than 18,000 of New York City’s frail aged.

History

Citymeals-on-Wheels was co-founded in 1981 by Gael Greene and James Beard. The organization was created in response to a New York Times article that reported on the city's elderly who were going without meals on weekends and holidays, a time when government-funded meal programs were not in operation.

Citymeals-on-Wheels provides a continuous lifeline of nutritious food and human company to homebound elderly New Yorkers in need, helping them to live with dignity in their own familiar homes and communities. The organization provides meals for every day of the year, including weekends and holidays. In addition to meal delivery, Citymeals also offers a range of companion services, including wellness checks and friendly visits.
