California Medical Association (CMA) is a professional organization representing physicians in the state of California. The association was established in 1856, making it one of the oldest and most influential medical associations in the United States.

History

The California Medical Association was founded in 1856 by a group of physicians who recognized the need for a professional organization to address the unique challenges of practicing medicine in California. The association has since grown to represent over 43,000 physicians, residents, and medical students throughout the state.

Mission and Goals

The mission of the CMA is to promote the science and art of medicine, protection of public health, and the betterment of the medical profession. Its goals include advocating for physicians and patients, promoting professional standards and ethics, and improving access to quality healthcare.

Structure and Organization

The CMA is governed by a House of Delegates, which sets policy for the association. The House is composed of representatives from local medical societies, specialty societies, and other groups. The association also has a Board of Trustees, which oversees the implementation of policies set by the House.

Advocacy

The CMA is active in advocacy at both the state and federal levels. It works to influence legislation and regulations that affect the practice of medicine and the health of Californians. The association also provides resources and support to physicians to help them navigate the complex healthcare landscape.

Education and Resources

The CMA offers a variety of resources to its members, including continuing medical education (CME) courses, practice management support, and legal services. The association also publishes the California Physician magazine, which provides news and information relevant to physicians in the state.
