Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), formerly known as the Korea Food & Drug Administration, is a South Korea-based government agency responsible for promoting the public health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of foods, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and cosmetics. The agency was established in 1996 and is currently under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

History[edit]

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety was established in 1996 as the Korea Food & Drug Administration (KFDA). In 2013, it was elevated to the status of a ministry, reflecting the importance of its role in protecting public health in South Korea.

Functions[edit]

The MFDS is responsible for developing policies and regulations related to food, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics. It conducts risk assessments, enforces regulations, and manages crises related to food and drug safety. The MFDS also conducts research and development activities to advance the science of food and drug safety.

Organization[edit]

The MFDS is headed by a Minister, who is appointed by the President of South Korea. The Minister is assisted by two Vice Ministers and several Directors-General, who oversee various bureaus within the MFDS. These bureaus include the Food Safety Bureau, the Pharmaceutical Safety Bureau, and the Medical Device Safety Bureau, among others.
