The National Rugby League (NRL) is a professional rugby league competition in Australasia. It is the top-level competition of the sport in Australia and New Zealand. The NRL's main competition is known as the Telstra Premiership due to sponsorship from Telstra Corporation.

History[edit]

The NRL was formed in 1998 as a joint partnership between the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and News Corporation-controlled Super League, following the Super League war of the mid-1990s. The league has undergone several expansions and contractions since its inception.

The NRL consists of 16 teams: 15 based in Australia and 1 in New Zealand. The teams are:

Competition Format[edit]

The NRL season runs from March to October, with each team playing 24 matches over 25 rounds. The top eight teams qualify for the NRL Finals Series, culminating in the NRL Grand Final, which determines the season's champion.
