Connaught Laboratories
Canadian pharmaceutical company
Connaught Laboratories was a Canadian pharmaceutical company that played a significant role in the development and distribution of vaccines and insulin. It was originally established as a public health initiative and became a key player in the global pharmaceutical industry.
History[edit]
Connaught Laboratories was founded in 1914 as the Antitoxin Laboratory at the University of Toronto. It was established to produce diphtheria antitoxin and other public health products. The laboratory was named after the Duke of Connaught, who was the Governor General of Canada at the time.

In the early 1920s, Connaught Laboratories became instrumental in the development and production of insulin, following the discovery of insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best. The laboratory was crucial in scaling up the production of insulin, making it widely available to patients with diabetes.
Contributions to Medicine[edit]
Connaught Laboratories was involved in the production of several important vaccines and medical products. In addition to insulin, the laboratory produced vaccines for tetanus, tuberculosis, and polio.
Insulin Production[edit]
Connaught Laboratories played a pivotal role in the mass production of insulin. After the initial discovery, the laboratory worked closely with Banting and Best to refine the extraction and purification processes. This collaboration led to the first widespread availability of insulin for diabetic patients.
Vaccine Development[edit]
The laboratory was also a leader in vaccine development. It produced the first Canadian-made polio vaccine and was involved in the development of the Salk vaccine. Connaught's work in vaccine production contributed significantly to public health efforts in Canada and around the world.
Legacy[edit]
Connaught Laboratories was eventually acquired by the Institut Mérieux in 1989, which later became part of Sanofi Pasteur. Despite the changes in ownership, the legacy of Connaught Laboratories lives on through its contributions to medical science and public health.
