Historic restaurant in Leipzig, Germany

Auerbachs Keller is one of the most famous and historic restaurants located in the heart of Leipzig, Germany. It is renowned for its rich history, cultural significance, and its association with the legendary writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

History[edit]

Auerbachs Keller entrance

Auerbachs Keller was established in the early 15th century, making it one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in Germany. The first documented mention of the establishment dates back to 1438. It was originally a wine bar and quickly became a popular meeting place for students and professors of the nearby University of Leipzig.

The restaurant gained fame in the 16th century when Heinrich Stromer, a professor of medicine at the university, took over the establishment. Stromer, who was also known as Dr. Auerbach, expanded the wine bar into a full-fledged restaurant. Under his management, Auerbachs Keller became a hub of intellectual and cultural activity.

Goethe and Faust[edit]

Auerbachs Keller is famously associated with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's play Faust. Goethe was a student at the University of Leipzig from 1765 to 1768 and frequented the restaurant. The establishment is immortalized in Faust, where it serves as the setting for one of the play's most memorable scenes. In this scene, Mephistopheles takes Faust to Auerbachs Keller, where they witness a group of students drinking and reveling. This scene highlights the themes of temptation and indulgence that are central to the play.

Architecture and Interior[edit]

Interior of Auerbachs Keller

The architecture of Auerbachs Keller reflects its long history. The restaurant is located in the basement of the Mädlerpassage, a historic shopping arcade in Leipzig. The interior is adorned with murals and sculptures that depict scenes from Goethe's Faust. These artworks were added in the early 20th century and contribute to the restaurant's unique atmosphere.

The main dining area, known as the "Großer Keller," features vaulted ceilings and traditional wooden furnishings. The "Fasskeller," or "Barrel Cellar," is another notable section of the restaurant, where large wine barrels are displayed, reminiscent of its origins as a wine bar.

Cultural Significance[edit]

Auerbachs Keller is not only a popular dining destination but also a cultural landmark. It attracts visitors from around the world who are interested in its literary connections and historical significance. The restaurant hosts various events and performances, often centered around the works of Goethe and other German literary figures.
