The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize is an international award established by the government of Japan to honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the advancement of medical research and medical services in Africa. History[edit]

The prize was announced in 2006 by then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). It was officially established in 2008, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Hideyo Noguchi's death. Noguchi, who died in Africa while researching yellow fever, is celebrated for his dedication to medical research and his contributions to global health.

Objectives[edit]

The primary objectives of the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize are to:

  • Recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of medical research and medical services in Africa.
  • Encourage further advancements in these fields by providing international recognition and support.
  • Strengthen the ties between Japan and Africa through collaborative efforts in health and medicine.

Award Categories[edit]

The prize is awarded in two categories:

Medical Research[edit]

This category honors individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to medical research in Africa. The research should have a substantial impact on the understanding, prevention, or treatment of diseases prevalent on the continent.

Medical Services[edit]

This category recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the improvement of medical services in Africa. This includes efforts to enhance healthcare delivery, increase access to medical care, and improve public health outcomes.

Prize Details[edit]

The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize is awarded every five years. Each laureate receives a certificate, a medal, and a monetary award. The prize ceremony is held in conjunction with the TICAD meetings, providing a platform for the laureates to share their work with an international audience.

Laureates[edit]

Since its inception, the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize has been awarded to several distinguished individuals and organizations. The laureates are selected by a committee of experts from Japan and Africa, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation of the candidates.
