John O. Agwunobi

John O. Agwunobi is a Nigerian-American physician, public health official, and business executive. He has held significant roles in both the public and private sectors, contributing to healthcare policy and business leadership.

Early Life and Education

John O. Agwunobi was born in Scotland to a Nigerian father and a Scottish mother. He spent his early years in Nigeria, where he developed an interest in medicine and public health. Agwunobi pursued his medical education at the University of Jos in Nigeria, where he earned his MBBS degree. He later moved to the United States to further his education, obtaining a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business.

Agwunobi began his career in the United States as a pediatrician, but soon transitioned into public health. He served as the Secretary of the Florida Department of Health from 2001 to 2005, where he was responsible for managing the state's public health system. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the state's response to the 2001 anthrax attacks and the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season.

In 2005, Agwunobi was appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under President George W. Bush. In this role, he was responsible for advising the Secretary of Health and Human Services on public health and science issues, and he oversaw the Office of Public Health and Science. He also held the rank of Admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

Business Career

After leaving public service, Agwunobi transitioned to the private sector. He joined Walmart as the Senior Vice President and President of the Health and Wellness business unit. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the company's health and wellness initiatives, including pharmacies, vision centers, and health clinics.

In 2020, Agwunobi became the CEO of Herbalife Nutrition, a global nutrition company. As CEO, he has focused on expanding the company's product offerings and enhancing its global reach.
