A synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid

Chemical structure of 5α-Dihydronormethandrone

5α-Dihydronormethandrone (also known as 5α-DHNMT) is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) and a derivative of nandrolone. It is a 5α-reduced metabolite of normethandrone, which is a progestin and anabolic steroid.

Chemical structure and properties

5α-Dihydronormethandrone is a 19-nortestosterone derivative, characterized by the absence of a carbon atom at the 19th position. This structural modification is common among nandrolone derivatives and contributes to their unique biological activity. The compound is a 5α-reduced form, meaning it has undergone reduction at the 5th carbon position, which typically increases the androgenic activity of steroids.

Pharmacology

As an anabolic-androgenic steroid, 5α-Dihydronormethandrone exhibits both anabolic (muscle-building) and androgenic (masculinizing) effects. The anabolic effects are primarily due to its ability to bind to and activate the androgen receptor, which leads to increased protein synthesis and muscle growth. The androgenic effects are related to the development and maintenance of male characteristics.

Metabolism

5α-Dihydronormethandrone is a metabolite of normethandrone, formed through the action of the enzyme 5α-reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and similarly converts normethandrone to 5α-Dihydronormethandrone. The reduction at the 5α position is a key step in the metabolism of many steroids, influencing their potency and activity.

Clinical use

While 5α-Dihydronormethandrone itself is not used clinically, its parent compound, normethandrone, has been used in the past for its progestogenic and anabolic properties. Normethandrone has been utilized in the treatment of endometriosis and as a component of hormonal contraceptives. The role of 5α-Dihydronormethandrone in these effects is primarily as a metabolite.

Safety and side effects

The use of anabolic-androgenic steroids, including derivatives like 5α-Dihydronormethandrone, can lead to a range of side effects. These may include androgenic alopecia, acne, hirsutism, and virilization in females. Long-term use can also affect the cardiovascular system, liver, and endocrine system.
