Combination drug used as a sedative and hypnotic

Secobarbital/brallobarbital/hydroxyzine is a combination medication used primarily as a sedative and hypnotic. It is known under the brand name Vesparax. This medication is used to induce sleep and reduce anxiety in patients undergoing medical procedures or experiencing severe insomnia.

Components[edit]

The combination drug consists of three active ingredients:

  • Secobarbital: A barbiturate that acts as a central nervous system depressant. It is used for its sedative and hypnotic properties.
  • Brallobarbital: Another barbiturate with similar effects to secobarbital, contributing to the overall sedative effect of the combination.
  • Hydroxyzine: An antihistamine with sedative properties, which also helps to reduce anxiety and tension.

Mechanism of Action[edit]

The combination of secobarbital, brallobarbital, and hydroxyzine works by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits activity in the brain. This results in a calming effect, making it easier for patients to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Uses[edit]

Secobarbital/brallobarbital/hydroxyzine is primarily used for:

  • Inducing sleep in patients with severe insomnia.
  • Reducing anxiety and tension before medical procedures.
  • Providing sedation in various clinical settings.

Administration[edit]

The medication is typically administered orally in tablet form. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the patient's condition and response to the medication.

Side Effects[edit]

Common side effects of this combination drug include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache

Serious side effects may include:

  • Respiratory depression
  • Confusion
  • Allergic reactions

Precautions[edit]

Patients should be monitored for signs of respiratory depression and allergic reactions. The use of this medication is contraindicated in patients with a history of substance abuse or respiratory disorders.

Discontinuation[edit]

The use of secobarbital/brallobarbital/hydroxyzine has declined due to the development of newer, safer sedative and hypnotic medications. It is important to taper off the medication gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
