Incrocio Manzoni
Italian grape variety
Incrocio Manzoni is a series of grape varieties developed by Professor Luigi Manzoni at the School of Viticulture and Oenology in Conegliano, Italy, during the 1920s and 1930s. These varieties are the result of cross-breeding experiments aimed at improving the quality and resilience of grapevines. The most notable of these is the Manzoni Bianco, a cross between Riesling and Pinot Blanc.
History
The development of the Incrocio Manzoni varieties was part of a broader effort in the early 20th century to enhance viticulture through scientific research. Professor Luigi Manzoni, a pioneer in this field, conducted extensive experiments to create grape varieties that could thrive in the diverse climates of Italy while producing high-quality wines. His work was particularly focused on creating hybrids that combined the desirable traits of different grape species.
Varieties
The Incrocio Manzoni series includes several varieties, each with unique characteristics. The most prominent are:
Manzoni Bianco

Manzoni Bianco, also known as Incrocio Manzoni 6.0.13, is the most widely planted of the Incrocio Manzoni varieties. It is a cross between Riesling and Pinot Blanc. This variety is known for its aromatic complexity and crisp acidity, making it suitable for producing high-quality white wines.
Manzoni Rosso
Manzoni Rosso, or Incrocio Manzoni 2.15, is a red grape variety resulting from a cross between Glera and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is less common than Manzoni Bianco but is valued for its deep color and rich flavor profile.
Other Varieties
Other notable Incrocio Manzoni varieties include:
- Manzoni Moscato, a cross involving Muscat varieties.
- Manzoni Traminer, which includes Gewürztraminer in its lineage.
Viticulture
The Incrocio Manzoni varieties are cultivated primarily in the Veneto region of Italy, where they benefit from the region's favorable climate and soil conditions. These varieties are known for their resistance to common vine diseases and their ability to produce consistent yields.
Wine Production

Wines made from Incrocio Manzoni grapes are appreciated for their balance and aromatic qualities. Manzoni Bianco, in particular, is used to produce both still and sparkling wines, often characterized by floral notes and a mineral finish.
