Comprehensive list of lymph nodes in the human body

Overview

The human body contains a complex network of lymph nodes, which are small, bean-shaped structures that play a crucial role in the immune system. These nodes filter lymph, a clear fluid that circulates through the lymphatic system, trapping bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances, which are then destroyed by specialized white blood cells known as lymphocytes.

Head and Neck Lymph Nodes

The lymph nodes in the head and neck region are numerous and can be categorized into several groups:

  • Cervical lymph nodes: These are located along the sides of the neck and are further divided into superficial and deep cervical nodes.
  • Submandibular lymph nodes: Found beneath the jaw, these nodes drain the floor of the mouth and the tongue.
  • Submental lymph nodes: Located under the chin, they drain the tip of the tongue and the central lower lip.
  • Parotid lymph nodes: Situated near the parotid gland, these nodes drain the scalp, external ear, and parts of the face.

Thoracic Lymph Nodes

The thoracic region contains several important groups of lymph nodes:

  • Mediastinal lymph nodes: These nodes are located in the mediastinum, the central compartment of the thoracic cavity, and include the tracheobronchial and paratracheal nodes.
  • Hilar lymph nodes: Found at the hilum of the lungs, they drain the lungs and bronchi.
  • Intercostal lymph nodes: Located between the ribs, these nodes drain the chest wall.

Abdominal Lymph Nodes

The abdomen contains numerous lymph nodes that are essential for draining the abdominal organs:

  • Mesenteric lymph nodes: These nodes are found in the mesentery, the tissue that attaches the intestines to the abdominal wall, and they drain the intestines.
  • Para-aortic lymph nodes: Located near the aorta, these nodes drain the abdominal organs and the lower limbs.
  • Celiac lymph nodes: Situated near the celiac trunk, they drain the stomach, liver, and spleen.

Pelvic and Inguinal Lymph Nodes

The pelvic and inguinal regions contain lymph nodes that are crucial for draining the lower body:

  • Iliac lymph nodes: These nodes are located along the iliac arteries and veins and drain the pelvic organs.
  • Inguinal lymph nodes: Found in the groin, these nodes are divided into superficial and deep groups and drain the lower limbs and external genitalia.
