The medical center was originally established as the DeWitt Army Community Hospital in 1957. In 2011, it was replaced by the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. In 2023, the facility was renamed in honor of Alexander Thomas Augusta, a pioneering African American physician and surgeon who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
