Odisha
Odisha is an Indian state located in the eastern part of the country. It is surrounded by the states of West Bengal to the north-east, Jharkhand to the north, Chhattisgarh to the west and north-west, and Andhra Pradesh to the south. Odisha has a coastline of 485 kilometres (301 mi) along the Bay of Bengal. The region is also known for its rich history and cultural heritage.
History[edit]
Odisha has a history spanning a period of over 5,000 years. The region was known as Kalinga in ancient times and was the site of the bloody Kalinga War in 261 BCE. The war was fought between the Mauryan Empire under Emperor Ashoka and the state of Kalinga. The aftermath of the war had a profound impact on Ashoka, who embraced Buddhism and spread the message of peace and non-violence.
Geography[edit]
Odisha is located in the eastern part of India, with the Bay of Bengal forming its eastern boundary. The state has a diverse range of geographical features, including fertile plains, coastal areas, and mountainous regions. The highest point in the state is Deomali at 1,672 metres (5,486 ft).

Odisha has a rich cultural heritage with influences from Buddhism, Jainism, and various dynasties that ruled the region. The state is known for its classical dance form, Odissi, and its distinctive style of temple architecture. The Rath Yatra of Puri is a famous festival celebrated annually in Odisha.

The economy of Odisha is one of the fastest growing in India. The state's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with rice being the major crop. Odisha also has significant resources of various minerals, including coal, bauxite, and iron ore.
Demographics[edit]
The majority of the population in Odisha are Odia people, who speak the Odia language. The state is also home to several tribal communities, who constitute a significant portion of the population.
