Commodity market
Commodity market is a market that trades in the primary economic sector rather than manufactured products, such as cocoa, fruit and sugar. Hard commodities are mined, such as gold and oil. Investors access about 50 major commodity markets worldwide with purely financial transactions increasingly outnumbering physical trades in which goods are delivered. Futures contracts are the oldest way of investing in commodities. Commodity markets can include physical trading and derivatives trading using spot prices, forwards, futures, and options on futures.
History[edit]
Commodity markets can trace their origins back to the Middle Ages when farmers, merchants, and traders came together to buy and sell goods. This was a time of a great deal of change in the world economy.
Types of commodities[edit]
Commodities traded in the commodity market are divided into two types: hard and soft commodities. Hard commodities are natural resources that are mined or extracted, such as gold, oil, and iron ore. Soft commodities are agricultural products or livestock, such as corn, wheat, coffee, sugar, soybeans, and pork.
Commodity trading[edit]
Commodity trading involves the trading of commodities for profit. It involves buying a commodity at a low price and selling it at a higher price. This can be done through physical delivery or through a derivatives contract.
Commodity futures[edit]
A commodity futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell a predetermined amount of a commodity at a specific price on a specific date in the future. Commodity futures are used by producers and consumers to protect against price fluctuations.
Commodity options[edit]
A commodity option is a contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a specific commodity at a specific price on or before a certain date.
Commodity exchanges[edit]
Commodity exchanges are institutions where commodities and commodity derivatives are traded. They offer a transparent, regulated marketplace for these trades.
