Haplogroup K (mtDNA)

Haplogroup K is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup. It is a descendant of haplogroup U8b and is believed to have originated approximately 12,000 years ago in the Near East. Haplogroup K is notable for its presence in various ancient and modern populations across Europe, the Near East, and parts of North Africa.

Origin and Distribution[edit]

Haplogroup K is thought to have originated in the Near East during the Upper Paleolithic period. It is a subclade of haplogroup U, specifically U8b, and is closely related to haplogroup U8a. The spread of haplogroup K is associated with the Neolithic expansion and the migration of early agriculturalists into Europe.

Haplogroup K is found at varying frequencies in modern populations. It is particularly common in Europe, where it accounts for approximately 6% of the population.
