Blitum californicum
Blitum californicum, also known as California goosefoot or Indian lettuce, is a species of plant in the family Amaranthaceae. It is native to the western United States, particularly California, and northern Mexico.
Description[edit]
Blitum californicum is an annual herb that grows up to 70 cm tall. The leaves are alternate, petiolate, and triangular to diamond-shaped. The flowers are small, green, and clustered in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is a small, round, black seed.
Habitat and distribution[edit]
Blitum californicum is found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, woodlands, and disturbed areas. It is most common in the coastal regions of California, but can also be found in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the deserts of southern California and northern Mexico.
Uses[edit]
The leaves of Blitum californicum are edible and were traditionally used by Native American tribes as a food source. They can be eaten raw or cooked and have a mild, spinach-like flavor.
Conservation status[edit]
While Blitum californicum is not currently listed as threatened or endangered, its habitat is being lost to urban development and agriculture. Conservation efforts are needed to ensure the survival of this species.
