Namandjé Bumpus (often referred to as N. Bumpus) is a renowned pharmacologist and educator, currently serving as the E.K. Marshall and Thomas H. Maren Professor and Director of the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is recognized for her significant contributions to the field of pharmacology, particularly in the area of drug metabolism and HIV therapeutics.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Bumpus was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan.

Career[edit]

Following her Ph.D., Bumpus completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, where she later joined the faculty. Her research primarily focuses on the metabolism of drugs used to treat HIV, with the aim of optimizing their efficacy and minimizing adverse effects. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in prestigious scientific journals and has been recognized with several awards for her contributions to the field.

In 2020, Bumpus was appointed as the E.K. Marshall and Thomas H. Maren Professor and Director of the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, making her the first African American woman to lead a department at the institution.

Bumpus has received numerous awards and honors for her work in pharmacology, including the PhRMA Foundation Award in Excellence in Pharmacology/Toxicology and the John J. Abel Award in Pharmacology from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
