Nationalism is a political ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to a nation or nation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other individual or group interests.

Nationalism is a modern movement. Throughout history, people have been attached to their native soil, to the traditions of their parents, and to established territorial authorities. But it was not until the end of the 18th century that nationalism began to be a generally recognized sentiment molding public and private life and one of the great, if not the greatest, single determining factors of modern history.

Origins of Nationalism[edit]

The origins of nationalism are complex, and they involve a combination of factors. These include the spread of education, which helped to create a literate public opinion, and the development of a modern economy, which made possible a mass urban and industrial society.

Types of Nationalism[edit]

There are several types of nationalism, including ethnic, civic, liberal, and expansionist.

Criticism of Nationalism[edit]

Nationalism has been criticized for promoting exclusionary and sometimes xenophobic attitudes, as well as for being a possible cause of war and conflict.
