Scholarship

Scholarship is a form of financial aid awarded to students to further their education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. Scholarship money is not required to be repaid.

Types of Scholarships

There are various types of scholarships such as Merit-based, Need-based, Student-specific, Career-specific, and College-specific scholarships.

Merit-based

Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities, and often factor in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record.

Need-based

Need-based scholarships are awarded based on the student and family's financial record and will require applicants to fill out a FAFSA to qualify if the scholarship is a federal award.

Student-specific

Student-specific scholarships are for students who qualify based on factors such as gender, race, religion, family and medical history, or many other student-specific factors.

Career-specific

Career-specific scholarships are for students who plan to pursue a specific field of study.

College-specific

College-specific scholarships are offered by individual colleges and universities to highly qualified applicants.

Scholarship Providers

Scholarship providers can be organizations, individuals, institutions, or the government. They offer scholarships to encourage students in their studies, research, or career paths.
