Schematic is a diagrammatic representation of an electrical or mechanical system. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the information the schematic is intended to convey, and may add unrealistic elements that aid comprehension.

Overview[edit]

A schematic diagram represents the elements of a system using abstract, graphic symbols rather than realistic pictures. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the key information the schematic is intended to convey, and may include oversimplified elements in order to make this essential meaning easier to grasp. For example, a subway map intended for riders may represent a subway station with a dot. The dot does not resemble the actual station at all but gives the viewer information without unnecessary visual clutter.

Types of Schematics[edit]

There are several types of schematics used to depict various types of systems. Some of these include:

  • Electrical Schematics: These are the most common type and depict an electrical circuit. They use symbols to represent electrical components and lines to represent the connections between them.
  • Electronic Schematics: These are used to depict electronic circuits. They use symbols to represent electronic components and lines to represent the connections between them.
  • Hydraulic Schematics: These are used to depict hydraulic systems. They use symbols to represent hydraulic components and lines to represent the connections between them.
  • Pneumatic Schematics: These are used to depict pneumatic systems. They use symbols to represent pneumatic components and lines to represent the connections between them.
