Ross University School of Medicine

Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) is a private medical school located in Bridgetown, Barbados. It was founded in 1978 and is part of Adtalem Global Education. RUSM offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree program and is known for its focus on providing medical education to students from diverse backgrounds.

History[edit]

RUSM was established in 1978 by Robert Ross, an entrepreneur and educator. Originally located in Dominica, the school relocated to Barbados in 2019 due to the impact of Hurricane Maria. The move was part of a strategic plan to enhance the educational facilities and provide a more stable environment for students and faculty.

Curriculum[edit]

The curriculum at RUSM is designed to prepare students for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and a career in medicine. The program is divided into two main components:

Basic Sciences[edit]

The Basic Sciences portion of the curriculum is taught over the first two years and takes place on the Barbados campus. It covers foundational medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. Students engage in lectures, laboratory work, and small group discussions.

Clinical Sciences[edit]

The Clinical Sciences portion is completed during the final two years of the program. Students participate in clinical rotations at affiliated hospitals in the United States and other countries. These rotations cover various medical specialties, including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Accreditation[edit]

RUSM is accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP). This accreditation ensures that the school meets international standards for medical education. Additionally, RUSM graduates are eligible to take the USMLE and apply for residency programs in the United States.

Student Life[edit]

RUSM offers a range of student services and extracurricular activities. The campus in Barbados provides modern facilities, including lecture halls, laboratories, and a library. Students can participate in various clubs and organizations, such as the Student Government Association and specialty interest groups.

Admissions[edit]

RUSM has a rolling admissions process and evaluates applicants based on academic performance, MCAT scores, and personal interviews. The school seeks to admit students who demonstrate a commitment to the field of medicine and the ability to succeed in a rigorous academic environment.
