Muhammad
Muhammad (Arabic: محمد; c. 570 – 8 June 632) was an Arab religious, social, and political leader and the founder of Islam according to Islamic tradition. He is viewed as the final prophet of God in all the main branches of Islam, though some modern denominations diverge from this belief. Muhammad united Arabia into a single Muslim polity, with the Quran as well as his teachings and practices forming the basis of Islamic religious belief.
Life[edit]
Born approximately in 570 CE in the Arabian city of Mecca, Muhammad was orphaned at an early age; he was raised under the care of his paternal uncle Abu Talib. After his childhood Muhammad primarily worked as a merchant. Occasionally, he would retreat to a cave in the mountains for several nights of seclusion and prayer; later, at age 40, he reported being visited by Gabriel in the cave and receiving his first revelation from God.
Teachings[edit]
Muhammad's followers view him not only as the last and greatest of the prophets, but also as the perfect human being. His teachings, preserved in the Quran and the Hadith, form the basis of Islamic law, ethics, and social norms. He taught monotheism, the importance of community, and social justice.
Legacy[edit]
Muhammad's life and teachings have had a profound impact on the world. His influence continues to be felt in the religious and cultural practices of more than a billion Muslims worldwide.
