University of Groningen
The University of Groningen (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, abbreviated as RUG) is a public research university located in Groningen, Netherlands. Founded in 1614, it is one of the oldest and largest universities in the Netherlands.

The University of Groningen was established on 23 August 1614. The founding of the university was part of a broader effort to promote higher education in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. The first rector magnificus was Ubbo Emmius, a noted scholar and historian.
During its early years, the university primarily focused on theology, law, medicine, and philosophy. Over the centuries, it expanded its academic offerings and became a major center for research and education in the Netherlands.
