Door is a movable structure used to open and close off an entrance, typically consisting of a panel that swings on hinges or that slides or spins inside a space.

Construction and components

A door's essential and primary purpose is to provide security by controlling access to the doorway (portal). Conventionally, it is a panel that fits into the portal of a building, room, or vehicle. Doors are generally made of a material suited to the door's task. Doors are commonly made of wood or metal, but other materials such as glass are used.

Doorway

The doorway is the opening that a door closes. It is a passage through which one can enter a building, room, or vehicle. The size of the doorway must be enough to allow the passage of the largest object likely to need to pass through it.

Doorframe

The doorframe is the frame into which a door is fitted. The frame is usually made of wood or metal, and it is typically composed of two jambs, a header, and possibly a sill.

Types of doors

There are many types of doors, depending on their purpose. Here are some of them:

  • Panel door - A door consisting of one or more rigid panels that slide in vertical or horizontal grooves.
  • Flush door - A door with a flat surface, usually painted or varnished.
  • French door - A door with glass panes throughout its length.
  • Sliding door - A door that opens by sliding, usually parallel to a wall.
  • Revolving door - A door that rotates around a central axis.

Door hardware

Door hardware refers to any of the items that are attached to a door or a drawer to enhance its functionality or appearance. This includes items such as hinges, handles, locks, and door knockers.
