Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City, and is geographically the smallest but also the most densely populated. Manhattan is often described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world.

History

Manhattan was founded on November 1, 1683, and was named after the Manhattan people, one of the indigenous tribes that lived in the area. The name "Manhattan" comes from the Munsee dialect of the Lenape language, and means "island of many hills".

Geography

Manhattan is located on Manhattan Island, bordered by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers. Several small islands are also part of the borough of Manhattan, including Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, Mill Rock, and U Thant Island.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, the population of Manhattan was 1,585,873. The population density was 69,468.9 inhabitants per square mile (26,822.9/km2).

Economy

Manhattan's economy is primarily based on finance, real estate, and the media industry. The borough is home to the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization.

Culture

Manhattan is known for its vibrant cultural scene. The borough is home to many world-class museums, art galleries, and theaters. The Broadway Theater District in Manhattan is one of the world's premier locations for theater.

Education

Manhattan is home to numerous universities, colleges, and other institutions of higher education, including Columbia University, New York University, and Fordham University.

Transportation

Manhattan is served by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which operates the subway and bus systems. The borough is also served by several commuter rail lines and is accessible by several major highways.
