Historian

Historian is a professional who studies and writes about the past and is regarded as an authority on it. Historians are concerned with the continuous, methodical narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race; as well as the study of all history in time.

A Historian is an individual who studies and writes about the past, and is regarded as an authority on it. Historians are concerned with the continuous, methodical narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race; as well as the study of all history in time.

Role

Historians use primary sources and other evidence to systematically investigate a topic, and then to write histories in the form of accounts of the past. They also often debate which narrative best explains an event, as well as the significance of different causes and effects. Historians also debate the nature of history and its usefulness by discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present.

Types of Historians

There are many types of historians, who can be grouped into categories based on their area of expertise. Some of the most common types include:

• Military Historian - Focuses on war, the military, and military institutions.
• Cultural Historian - Studies the culture of a certain time and place.
• Political Historian - Looks at the politics and political institutions of the past.
• Social Historian - Focuses on the lives of ordinary people in the past.
• Economic Historian - Studies the economies of different times and places.
