Mesoamerican chronology is a framework that organizes and orders the events of Mesoamerica, a region that extends from central Mexico through Central America. This chronology is divided into several periods, each characterized by specific cultural and technological developments.

Formative Period[edit]

The Formative Period (also known as the Preclassic period) dates from 2000 BCE to 250 CE. This period saw the rise of the Olmec civilization, often considered the "mother culture" of Mesoamerica. The Olmecs are known for their colossal head sculptures and for being the first Mesoamerican culture to develop a writing system.

Classic Period[edit]

The Classic Period (250 CE to 900 CE) is marked by the dominance of the Maya civilization. During this period, the Maya developed a complex writing system, made significant advances in astronomy and mathematics, and built monumental architecture, including the famous step pyramids.

Postclassic Period[edit]

The Postclassic Period (900 CE to 1521 CE) is characterized by the rise of the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs, also known as the Mexica, established a vast empire centered in Tenochtitlan, present-day Mexico City. They are known for their complex social, political, and religious systems, as well as their contributions to art and literature.

Colonial Period[edit]

The Colonial Period (1521 CE to 1821 CE) began with the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. This period saw the imposition of Spanish culture and Catholicism, the exploitation of indigenous labor, and the introduction of new diseases that decimated the indigenous population.

Modern Period[edit]

The Modern Period (1821 CE to the present) began with Mexico's independence from Spain. This period has been marked by political upheaval, economic development, and the struggle for indigenous rights and recognition.
