Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England. With an estimated population of 498,042 in 2019, it is the ninth-largest English district by population. Liverpool's metropolitan area is the fifth-largest in the UK with a population of 2.24 million.
History
Liverpool was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. It is known for its rich history, which includes its role as a key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, its cultural impact, particularly in music, and its successful football teams, Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C..
Culture
Liverpool is recognised for its culture, architecture, and transport links. It is closely associated with the arts, particularly music; the popularity of The Beatles, widely regarded as the most influential music group in history, contributed to the city's status as a tourist destination. Since then, the city has continued to produce hundreds of notable musical acts.
Economy
Liverpool's economy is one of the largest within the UK, sitting at the centre of one of the two core economies within the North West of England. It is dominated by service sector industries, both public and private. In 2007, over 60% of all employment in the city was in the public administration, education, health, banking, finance and insurance sectors.
Education
Liverpool has three universities: the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, and Liverpool Hope University. It also has a long-established art school, the Liverpool School of Art and Design, founded in 1825.
Sport
Liverpool is most famous for its football clubs, Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C.. The city's footballing rivalry is enacted in the Merseyside Derby, which takes place twice each season.
