University of Western Ontario
The University of Western Ontario (UWO), commonly known as Western University, is a public research university located in London, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1878, the university is a member of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities.
History[edit]
The University of Western Ontario was established on 7 March 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron as "The Western University of London Ontario." The university was initially affiliated with the Church of England. The first four faculties were Arts, Divinity, Law, and Medicine. In 1881, the first students graduated from the university.
In 1916, the university became non-denominational and began to expand rapidly. The university's name was officially changed to the University of Western Ontario in 1923. Over the years, the university has grown to become one of Canada's leading research institutions.
Campus[edit]
The main campus of Western University is located in the city of London, Ontario, and spans 455 hectares of land. The campus is known for its beautiful architecture and green spaces. Notable buildings include the University College, the D.B. Weldon Library, and the Physics and Astronomy Building.
Libraries[edit]
Western University has several libraries, with the D.B. Weldon Library being the largest. The library system supports the research and teaching needs of the university community.
Residences[edit]
The university offers a variety of residence options for students, including traditional dormitory-style residences and apartment-style accommodations. Notable residences include Saugeen-Maitland Hall and Sydenham Hall.
