Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems held together by calcium carbonate structures secreted by corals. They are found in the warm, clear, shallow waters of tropical oceans worldwide. Reefs have existed on Earth for millions of years and are home to a quarter of all marine species.

Structure and Formation

Coral reefs are formed by the accumulation of coral skeletons, which are made of calcium carbonate. This process is facilitated by the symbiotic relationship between corals and the microscopic algae known as zooxanthellae. The algae provide the corals with nutrients through photosynthesis, while the corals provide the algae with a protected environment and the compounds necessary for photosynthesis.

Biodiversity

Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. They are home to a wide variety of marine species, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and many others. Despite covering less than 0.1% of the world's ocean surface, they provide a habitat for 25% of all marine species.

Threats and Conservation

Coral reefs are under threat from a variety of factors, including climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Efforts to conserve coral reefs include the establishment of marine protected areas, the promotion of sustainable fishing practices, and research into coral breeding and transplantation techniques.
