Schumacher was born on June 23, 1822, in Cologne, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1843 and settled in Akron, Ohio. In Akron, he started his career as a grocer and quickly recognized the potential of the oatmeal market.
Founding of Quaker Oats Company[edit]
In 1856, Schumacher founded the German Mills American Oatmeal Factory, which later became known as the Quaker Oats Company.
