Entomophthorales
Entomophthorales is an order of fungi within the phylum Zygomycota. This order is known for its pathogenic species that infect insects and other arthropods. The Entomophthorales are unique among fungi in their ability to actively discharge their spores, which are then spread by the wind to new hosts.
Taxonomy[edit]
The order Entomophthorales belongs to the phylum Zygomycota, which is one of the most primitive groups of fungi. The Entomophthorales are divided into two families: the Entomophthoraceae and the Meristacraceae. The Entomophthoraceae includes the genera Entomophthora, Pandora, Zoophthora, Erynia, and Conidiobolus. The Meristacraceae includes the genera Meristacrum and Basidiobolus.
Morphology[edit]
The fungi in the order Entomophthorales are characterized by their unique spore discharge mechanism. The spores are produced in a sporangium, which is a specialized structure that can actively discharge the spores into the air. This is in contrast to most other fungi, which rely on passive spore dispersal mechanisms.
Pathogenicity[edit]
Many species within the order Entomophthorales are pathogenic, infecting insects and other arthropods. The fungi infect their hosts by producing spores that are inhaled or ingested by the host. Once inside the host, the spores germinate and the fungus begins to grow, eventually killing the host.
Ecological Role[edit]
The Entomophthorales play an important role in controlling insect populations. By infecting and killing insects, these fungi help to keep insect populations in check. This has led to the use of some species of Entomophthorales as biological control agents in agriculture.
