William E. Miller (March 22, 1914 – June 24, 1983) was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York from 1951 to 1965. He is perhaps best known for being the Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in the 1964 United States presidential election, running alongside Barry Goldwater.

Early Life and Education[edit]

William E. Miller was born in Lockport, New York. He attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a degree in law. After completing his education, Miller began his career as a lawyer before entering politics.

Political Career[edit]

Miller's political career began when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1950, representing a district in New York. During his time in Congress, Miller was known for his conservative views and was a staunch anti-communist, aligning closely with the policies and ideologies of Barry Goldwater.

In 1964, Miller was chosen by Goldwater to be his running mate in the presidential election. The Goldwater-Miller ticket was portrayed as a staunchly conservative alternative to the incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson. However, they were defeated in a landslide, with Johnson winning one of the largest victories in U.S. presidential history.

Later Life and Legacy[edit]

After the 1964 election, Miller returned to practicing law and remained active in Republican politics. He passed away in 1983.

Miller's legacy in American politics is marked by his role in the 1964 presidential campaign, which, despite its defeat, energized the conservative base of the Republican Party and set the stage for the future political landscape, including the eventual election of Ronald Reagan.
