Hicksbeachia pinnatifolia is a rare species of Macadamia tree native to the rainforests of Australia. It is commonly known as the Red Bopple Nut, Monkey Nut, Red Nut, Beef Nut or Rose Nut.

Description[edit]

Hicksbeachia pinnatifolia is a small to medium-sized tree, typically growing to a height of 10-12 meters. The leaves are pinnate, with 7-11 leaflets which are dark green on top and paler beneath. The tree produces clusters of bright red, fleshy fruits which contain one or two seeds.

Distribution and Habitat[edit]

The Red Bopple Nut is found in the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia, from southeastern Queensland to northeastern New South Wales. It grows in well-drained soils in lowland and upland rainforests, often near streams.

Cultivation and Uses[edit]

Hicksbeachia pinnatifolia is cultivated for its edible seeds, which are similar in taste and texture to the commercially grown macadamia nut. The tree is also grown as an ornamental for its attractive foliage and bright red fruits. It is suitable for cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions, and requires a well-drained soil and a position in full sun or partial shade.

Conservation[edit]

The Red Bopple Nut is classified as a vulnerable species under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The main threats to its survival are habitat loss due to land clearing for agriculture and urban development, and the spread of invasive plant species.
