Caffè sospeso (Italian: suspended coffee) is a tradition originating from Naples, Italy. This practice involves a person paying in advance for a coffee to be consumed by someone else, typically someone who cannot afford to pay. The concept has since spread globally, symbolizing anonymous charity and community spirit.

History[edit]

The tradition of the caffè sospeso dates back over a hundred years in Naples. It began as a charitable gesture among the less fortunate, where those who experienced good luck would order a sospeso, paying the price of two coffees but receiving and consuming only one. The remaining coffee would then be available for a poor person to claim later.

Modern Interpretation[edit]

In recent years, the tradition has seen a resurgence and spread beyond Italy, becoming popular in various countries around the world. It has been adopted by many coffee shops, especially in times of economic hardship or during the holiday season as a way to provide for those less fortunate. The caffè sospeso has also been extended to other items such as meals or books.

Cultural Significance[edit]

The caffè sospeso is more than just a cup of coffee. It is a symbol of community spirit, a way for people to show kindness to strangers. In Naples, it is seen as an essential part of the city's culture and identity. The practice has also been recognized by the UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.
