Hillingdon

Hillingdon is a suburban area in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It is located 14.2 miles (22.8 km) west of Charing Cross and includes the southern slope of Hillingdon Hill.

History

Hillingdon dates back to the 8th century and its name is believed to mean "hill of a man named Hille". The area was historically part of the parish of Hillingdon in the county of Middlesex, and was a significant part of the manor of Colham. In the 19th century, Hillingdon experienced significant population growth.

Geography

Hillingdon is located in the far west of London. It is bordered by Uxbridge to the north, West Drayton to the south, Ickenham to the west, and Hayes to the east. The area includes Hillingdon Hill, which provides views over the surrounding area.

Transport

Hillingdon is served by Hillingdon tube station, which is on the Uxbridge branch of both the Metropolitan line and Piccadilly line. There are also several bus routes that serve the area.

Education

There are several schools in Hillingdon, including Hillingdon Primary School and Bishopshalt School. The Brunel University London is also located in the area.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in Hillingdon, including author Enid Blyton, who lived in the area for several years.
