Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) is a Scottish charity that provides hospice services for children and young people with life-shortening conditions. CHAS offers a full family support service for babies, children, and young people, both in hospice settings and in their own homes.

History[edit]

CHAS was established in 1992 to address the need for specialized hospice care for children in Scotland. The organization has grown to operate two hospices: Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch. These facilities provide a range of services including respite care, end-of-life care, and bereavement support.

Services[edit]

CHAS provides comprehensive support to families, including:

  • Respite Care: Offering families a break from the demands of caring for a child with a life-shortening condition.
  • End-of-Life Care: Providing compassionate care and support during the final stages of a child's life.
  • Bereavement Support: Helping families cope with the loss of a child through counseling and support groups.
  • Home Care: Delivering care and support in the family's home, allowing children to remain in familiar surroundings.

CHAS operates two main hospices:

  • Rachel House: Located in Kinross, it was the first children's hospice in Scotland, opening in 1996. It offers a welcoming environment with facilities such as a hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, and family accommodation.
  • Robin House: Situated in Balloch, it opened in 2005 and provides similar facilities and services as Rachel House, with additional features like a music therapy room and extensive gardens.

Community and Volunteer Support[edit]

CHAS relies heavily on the support of volunteers and the community. Volunteers assist in various roles, from fundraising to providing direct support to families. Community fundraising events are crucial for sustaining the services CHAS offers.
